What Modern Education Needs Beyond Academic Achievement

For generations, academic achievement has been one of the clearest ways schools have demonstrated that learning is taking place. Students learn mathematics, science, languages and the humanities. They complete examinations. They receive grades. They progress through increasingly demanding levels of study.

None of this is unimportant. Academic knowledge matters enormously. A student cannot think deeply about science without scientific knowledge, make sophisticated historical arguments without understanding history, or communicate precisely without a strong command of language.

The problem begins when academic attainment becomes a proxy for the entirety of education.

A young person may achieve excellent grades and still struggle to explain an idea clearly, evaluate an unfamiliar claim, work constructively with someone who disagrees with them, generate alternative solutions to a problem, understand a different cultural perspective or make thoughtful decisions when there is no predetermined answer.

Modern education therefore faces a more difficult question: What should a young person be able to do with what they know?

Academic achievement is a foundation, not the whole structure

It is tempting to frame this as a choice between academic excellence and so-called soft skills. That is a false distinction. Reading, mathematics, science and disciplinary knowledge provide the intellectual foundations upon which many other capabilities depend.

The OECD’s PISA 2022 assessment of creative thinking shows that creative thinking and academic performance are related but not identical. The assessment examined students’ ability to generate, evaluate and improve ideas across written, visual, scientific and social problem-solving contexts.

Students need to learn how to think

One of education’s most important responsibilities is developing students who can distinguish between a claim and evidence, an opinion and an argument, correlation and causation, confidence and certainty, and information and understanding.

Critical thinking is not simply being sceptical. It involves asking better questions: What is being claimed? What evidence supports it? What assumptions does the argument depend upon? What evidence would change our conclusion? What alternative explanations exist?

Students need to learn how to communicate ideas

Knowing something and being able to communicate it are different capabilities. A student may understand a complex concept but struggle to explain it to another person.

Communication requires students to consider audience, purpose, evidence, structure and clarity. Public speaking, writing, discussion, presentation and storytelling are therefore not merely extracurricular activities; they are ways of making thinking visible.

Students need to learn how to create, not simply reproduce

A school system can become very efficient at asking students to reproduce known answers. Yet many important problems young people will eventually face will not come with answer keys.

Creative thinking gives students opportunities to generate possibilities before evaluating them. The OECD’s PISA creative-thinking assessment specifically examined the generation, evaluation and improvement of ideas.

Students need to learn how to work with disagreement

One of the most important educational capabilities is intellectual disagreement. Students are often taught how to provide an answer; they are less consistently taught how to respond when somebody else believes something different.

Debate, seminar discussion, structured dialogue and collaborative problem-solving can provide practical environments for developing listening, interpretation, evidence, patience and intellectual humility.

Students need agency

Education is ultimately preparation for making decisions. Young people will have to decide what to study, what work to pursue, what information to trust, how to respond to uncertainty and which opportunities to pursue.

UNICEF India’s work on adolescent development and participation emphasises the importance of information, skills and opportunities for meaningful participation in young people’s development.

Education should connect knowledge to the world

A history lesson can develop argumentation. A science lesson can develop evidence evaluation. A mathematics lesson can develop modelling and reasoning. A literature lesson can develop interpretation and empathy. A debate can develop research and communication. A community project can develop collaboration and agency.

The question is not where to fit critical thinking into the curriculum. It is how the curriculum itself can become a vehicle for developing better thinkers.

The education system we should be building

A strong education system should produce students who can know, think, create, communicate, collaborate, reflect and act. These capabilities are not alternatives to academic excellence. They are what allow academic knowledge to become useful.

The question for educators is therefore no longer simply, ‘What did the student learn?’ It should also be, ‘What can the student now think, create, communicate, question and do that they could not do before?’
