The Science of Reading in India: What the Evidence Says About Foundational Literacy Instruction

What the Science of Reading Actually Is

The term 'Science of Reading' has become something of a slogan in English-speaking educational debates — associated with a specific position in ongoing arguments about reading instruction, particularly about the role of phonics versus meaning-based approaches. Before applying the research to the Indian context, it is worth being precise about what the evidence actually shows.

The reading science consensus — as represented in systematic reviews including the US National Reading Panel report (2000), the UK Rose Review (2006), and subsequent replications — supports a set of specific conclusions about foundational reading instruction.

Phonological awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate the sound units within words) is a reliable predictor of reading success and is teachable. Systematic phonics instruction — teaching children the relationship between written symbols and the sounds they represent, in a structured sequence — produces significantly better decoding outcomes than unsystematic or incidental phonics instruction. Fluency supports comprehension by freeing cognitive resources from decoding for meaning-making. Vocabulary knowledge is a critical determinant of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is not automatic once decoding is established — it requires deliberate instruction in specific comprehension strategies.

These conclusions are robust across multiple studies and multiple languages, though the specific application varies across languages with different phoneme-grapheme correspondence systems.

Applying the Evidence to India's Linguistic Context

The reading science evidence applies to India, but its application is more complex than its application in monolingual English-speaking contexts, for reasons specific to India's linguistic situation.

India's major scripts differ in their phoneme-grapheme correspondence from the Roman alphabet in ways that matter for reading instruction. Devanagari, Tamil script, Telugu script, Kannada script, and most other major Indian scripts are alphasyllabic — organised around syllable units rather than individual phonemes. This means the unit of phonological awareness most relevant to reading in Devanagari or Tamil is not the individual phoneme (as in English phonics instruction) but the syllable or akshar. Research on reading development in Indic scripts — though smaller than the English-language evidence base — suggests that syllable-level phonological awareness is particularly important for early reading in these scripts.

Multilingualism adds a further layer. Many Indian children are learning to read in a language that is not their home language — which means foundational literacy instruction must simultaneously address language acquisition and reading acquisition. The evidence suggests that phonological awareness transfers across languages to a significant degree, but that vocabulary and background knowledge must be built in each language separately.

What This Means for Read-Aloud and The Read Aloud Project

The Science of Reading evidence has specific implications for how read-aloud fits within the broader architecture of foundational literacy instruction.

Read-aloud is not a substitute for systematic phonics instruction. A child who is not receiving explicit, sequenced instruction in the phoneme-grapheme correspondences of their school's written language will not learn to decode through read-aloud alone. The comprehension, vocabulary, and narrative skills that read-aloud develops are foundational, but they sit alongside and support decoding instruction rather than replacing it.

Read-aloud is, however, one of the most effective tools available for developing the non-decoding components of reading comprehension — vocabulary, listening comprehension, background knowledge, and narrative understanding — that predict reading outcomes once decoding is established. The reading science evidence is consistent that many children who can decode adequately still struggle with comprehension because their vocabulary, background knowledge, or comprehension strategies are insufficient. Read-aloud directly addresses these components.

The Read Aloud Project's approach is explicitly positioned within this understanding: read-aloud is a complementary practice alongside whatever phonics and decoding instruction the school provides. Schools that implement strong read-aloud alongside strong foundational decoding instruction are likely to produce stronger readers than schools that implement either in isolation.
