The Listening Environment: What Classroom Acoustics Do to Read-Aloud and How to Fix It

Why Acoustics Matter for Reading Aloud

Children, and particularly young children, have significantly less mature auditory processing than adults — their brains are less efficient at separating a target signal (the teacher's voice) from background noise. Research on classroom acoustics consistently finds that ambient noise levels above approximately 35 decibels (dB) significantly impair children's ability to understand speech, and that the impairment is greater for younger children, for children learning in a second language, and for children with any degree of hearing loss. Most Indian school classrooms, built with hard concrete or tile surfaces, no acoustic treatment, and proximity to outdoor noise sources, have ambient noise levels well above this threshold. The consequence for read-aloud is direct: children hear the teacher's voice but cannot reliably parse the words, leading to comprehension failures that are attributed to inattention or comprehension difficulty rather than to the acoustic environment.

What Teachers Can Do Without Budget

Positioning: the single most effective no-cost intervention is positioning children as close to the reader as possible. Sound intensity decreases with distance — a child 5 metres from the teacher receives significantly less clear signal than one at 2 metres. Bringing students into a close semicircle around the teacher before read-aloud sessions significantly improves the acoustic environment without any materials. Soft surfaces: encouraging students to sit on the floor (on bags or clothing) rather than on hard chairs reduces reflective surface area and slightly improves room acoustics. Time of day: reading aloud when external noise is lowest — before outdoor break periods rather than during or after them — reduces competing noise. Voice: a slower, more deliberate reading pace with slightly exaggerated consonants is more intelligible in reverberant environments than natural speech pace. These adjustments together can significantly improve the listening experience in standard Indian classroom conditions.

When Budget Is Available

Low-cost interventions that make a meaningful acoustic difference: fabric hangings or curtain panels on walls absorb sound and reduce reverberation. A small portable bluetooth speaker placed between the teacher and the class can amplify the teacher's voice to reach children at the back without the teacher having to raise their voice. Carpet squares or floor mats for children to sit on during read-aloud reduce floor reflection. None of these require significant expenditure.
