Philosophy for Children: Why Indian Schools Should Teach Kids to Ask Better Questions

The Question We Are Not Asking

India produces extraordinary quantities of people who are very good at finding right answers. The IIT-JEE, NEET, and the broader competitive examination culture have produced generations of students with formidable capacity for recalling facts, applying algorithms, and selecting the correct option under time pressure.

What Indian education has been less successful at producing — and what employers, universities, and researchers increasingly identify as the missing skill — is the capacity to ask good questions. To identify what the real problem is before attempting to solve it. To recognise when a question is poorly formed. To hold uncertainty without panic. To reason carefully through a position that challenges a prior belief.

These are not vague soft skills. They are specific cognitive capacities that can be taught — and that a documented pedagogical approach called Philosophy for Children (P4C) has been developing and testing for more than fifty years.

What Philosophy for Children Actually Is

Philosophy for Children is not a subject about philosophy. It is a pedagogical method — a way of structuring classroom inquiry — developed initially by American philosopher Matthew Lipman at Montclair State University in the 1970s and now practised in schools across more than sixty countries.

The central practice is the Community of Inquiry. A class reads or watches a shared stimulus — a short story, a picture book, a film clip, a news item — and then generates questions together. The teacher facilitates rather than directs. Students discuss their questions, challenge each other's reasoning, change their minds when the argument warrants it, and build shared understanding through dialogue rather than instruction.

The questions that emerge in well-run Communities of Inquiry are genuinely philosophical: Is it ever right to lie to protect someone? Can something be fair for one person and unfair for another at the same time? If you change every part of a ship, is it still the same ship? These are not trivial questions, and they do not have simple answers. The point is not to arrive at a definitive conclusion but to think more carefully about why these questions are difficult and what good reasoning about them looks like.

P4C is not unstructured discussion. The teacher plays a crucial role — not in providing answers but in modelling philosophical moves: asking for reasons, distinguishing between examples and principles, identifying assumptions, pressing for clarity, acknowledging when a point is well-made. This facilitation skill requires training and practice.

What the Evidence Says

The evidence base for Philosophy for Children has grown substantially in the last two decades, though it remains more extensive in some areas than others.

The most cited large-scale evidence comes from a randomised controlled trial conducted by the Education Endowment Foundation in England, published in 2015. The trial involved 3,159 primary school students across 48 schools over one year. Students who received P4C sessions showed improvements equivalent to approximately two additional months of learning progress in reading and mathematics compared to control groups. The effects were larger for disadvantaged students. The trial did not show significant improvements in writing.

The EEF's evaluation represents a high-quality piece of evidence — randomised, controlled, independently evaluated, and conducted at meaningful scale. It is not the only evidence. A body of smaller studies across multiple countries has found associations between P4C and improvements in argumentation skills, perspective-taking, and tolerance for ambiguity. A 2017 systematic review in Thinking Skills and Creativity found broadly positive effects across multiple outcomes, while noting that study quality varied.

Important limitations should be acknowledged. Most of the existing evidence comes from Western contexts, predominantly English-language settings. There is limited rigorous research on P4C outcomes specifically in Indian contexts. The EEF trial's gains in literacy and numeracy — while meaningful — may partly reflect the general benefits of increased student engagement and teacher attention rather than specifically philosophical reasoning. Sustained implementation with well-trained teachers appears to matter significantly for outcomes.

The evidence is promising, not conclusive. It is strong enough to justify serious consideration and genuine piloting, not yet strong enough to mandate system-wide adoption.

Why the Indian Context Makes This Particularly Relevant

Several features of Indian education make the case for philosophy-based inquiry particularly compelling.

The examination system rewards recall over reasoning. Students who spend years learning to select the correct answer among four options are not necessarily developing the capacity to construct an argument, challenge an assumption, or reason through a genuinely open question. The National Education Policy 2020 explicitly identifies critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving as core competencies — but identifying them as goals without changing pedagogical approaches is insufficient.

The social context of Indian classrooms often makes questioning difficult. In many Indian classrooms, questioning the teacher or expressing a different view is culturally discouraged — the teacher is the authority and the student's role is to receive, not to challenge. P4C's Community of Inquiry structure explicitly normalises disagreement, uncertainty, and changing one's mind as signs of intellectual engagement rather than failures of respect. This is a significant cultural shift, and it is one that requires deliberate and skilled facilitation.

India's diversity is a resource for philosophical inquiry. Questions about fairness, identity, language, belonging, and justice — which are central to P4C practice — have immediate and rich resonance in Indian classrooms where students may bring genuinely different cultural, religious, and linguistic perspectives to the same question. The diversity that can complicate classroom management in other contexts becomes, in a well-facilitated Community of Inquiry, one of the method's greatest assets.

Several Indian schools — primarily in the private sector and among IB schools — have begun introducing P4C or P4C-influenced approaches. Systematic evidence from Indian implementations is limited, and this is an area where research and documentation would be genuinely valuable.

What Schools and Teachers Can Do

For schools interested in introducing P4C or philosophy-based inquiry, the following guidance reflects what implementation experience and research suggest.

Start with teacher training. P4C facilitation is a specific skill that requires practice and feedback. Introducing P4C without investing in teacher preparation typically produces discussion rather than inquiry — which has value but does not realise the approach's potential. The Society for Advancing Philosophical Enquiry and Reflection in Education (SAPERE) in the UK is the primary international training organisation for P4C and offers resources and training pathways. Several organisations in India are beginning to offer P4C training — checking current availability is worthwhile.

Use age-appropriate stimuli rooted in the children's own cultural context. A P4C session built around a story from the Panchatantra, a folk tale from the school's region, or a situation familiar from the children's own lives will generate richer inquiry than a stimulus that feels imported and foreign. This is one of the areas where Indian educators can genuinely adapt and improve on the Western origins of the approach.

Protect the time. P4C requires unhurried time in which students can think, and the pressures of curriculum coverage in Indian schools can make this feel impossible. Starting with one session per week of thirty to forty-five minutes — framed as explicitly protected time for thinking rather than content delivery — is a realistic beginning.
