Month-by-Month Advisory Calendar: Indian Students Applying to Germany in 2027

18 to 12 Months Before Start (Jan–Jul 2026 for Oct 2027 intake)

Month 18–16: Research programmes and universities. Use the CHE Hochschulranking (che.de) for your field. Identify 8–12 target programmes across a range of selectivity. Begin German language study if not already started — target B1 by month 12. Month 15–13: Begin German language proficiency preparation seriously if your target programmes require TestDaF or DSH. Prepare for APS interview — review your academic work, thesis topics, and core subjects from your undergraduate degree. Contact potential supervisors if applying for a PhD (see our PhD guide). Month 12: Reach out to the APS India (aps-india.de) to understand current appointment availability and begin the process of gathering required documents. Request official transcripts from your Indian university — this takes longer than most students expect, sometimes 4–8 weeks for certified copies.

12 to 6 Months Before Start (Jul–Jan 2027 for Oct 2027 intake)

Month 12–10: Book your APS appointment as soon as slots are available. The APS process takes 4–8 weeks from interview to certificate. Submit your APS application and attend your interview. Month 10–8: Prepare your application documents for target universities — motivation letter (see our motivation letter guide), CV in tabellarischer format, certified transcripts, language certificate. Check each university's specific requirements on their website and on uni-assist.de. Register with uni-assist if your target universities require it. Month 8–7: Submit university applications. German university application deadlines vary — summer semester (April start) typically January 15, winter semester (October start) typically July 15 for most programmes, though many programmes have earlier internal deadlines. Check each programme's specific deadline, not the general university deadline. Month 7–6: Open your blocked account (Expatrio or Fintiba). The setup takes 2–4 weeks and the funds must be in place before the visa application.

6 Months to Arrival (Feb–Sep 2027 for Oct 2027 intake)

Month 6–5: Receive admission decisions. If admitted, receive your unconditional Zulassungsbescheid. Begin German health insurance enrollment — contact TK, AOK, or another GKV provider online with your admission letter. Month 5–4: Book German visa appointment through VFS Global (vfsglobal.com/Germany/India). During peak season, appointments are 4–8 weeks out — book immediately. Gather all visa documents. Month 4–3: Attend visa appointment. Standard processing: 4–8 weeks. Month 3–2: Begin housing search actively — WG-Gesucht, university Studentenwerk listings, Facebook groups for your city. Month 2–1: Book flights. Register with Indian Embassy in Germany after arrival (bfs.bund.de). Month 1–arrival: Arrange airport pickup or accommodation for first night. Bring originals of all documents to Germany. Register at Einwohnermeldeamt within two weeks of arrival.
