Why Deadlines Are Non-Negotiable in the German System

German universities operate on fixed academic calendars with hard application deadlines that are, in most cases, genuinely non-negotiable. An application submitted after the deadline will not be considered for that semester's intake — even by one day, even with a compelling explanation. This is fundamentally different from some other university systems where deadlines are soft, where late applications are sometimes considered on a rolling basis, or where extenuating circumstances can extend the window.

For Indian students, this firmness has a specific implication: the German university application calendar must be planned backwards from the deadline, not forwards from the decision to apply. By the time a student decides to apply to Germany, the earliest upcoming deadlines may already be six months away — or six months past. Knowing the deadline landscape before you make your decision allows you to plan realistically.

Summer Semester (April Start) Application Deadlines

The summer semester (Sommersemester) begins in April and is available at most German universities, though a smaller proportion of programmes admit international students in April than in October.

For applications through uni-assist: the standard application window for the summer semester runs from approximately October 1 to January 15. Some programmes close earlier — applications for highly competitive Master's programmes may close by December 1. Check specific programme deadlines on the uni-assist portal and on each target university's admissions page.

For direct applications: universities that handle international applications directly often have summer semester deadlines between November 1 and January 31. TU Munich, for example, typically sets its summer semester international application deadline in December of the preceding year.

APS certificate: for a summer semester application, your APS certificate should ideally be in hand by November of the preceding year. This means beginning the APS document submission process by August or September at the latest.

Language tests: TestDAF and DSH test dates in India relevant to summer semester applications typically fall in October and November. Register for these tests by August to ensure a place.

Scholarships: DAAD scholarship deadlines for the summer semester vary significantly by programme type. Research-based DAAD scholarships often have October deadlines for the following summer semester. Check the DAAD programme database for specific deadlines relevant to your field and level of study.

Winter Semester (October Start) Application Deadlines

The winter semester (Wintersemester) begins in October and is the primary intake for most programmes at German universities, including the majority of English-taught Master's programmes.

For applications through uni-assist: the standard application window for the winter semester runs from approximately April 1 to July 15. The most popular and competitive Master's programmes may effectively close by May 31 as places fill, even if the official deadline is later. Apply as early in the window as possible.

For direct applications: winter semester direct application deadlines vary significantly between universities. TU Munich's engineering programmes typically have May 31 deadlines. RWTH Aachen's Master's programmes often close by May 15. Heidelberg University's programme-specific deadlines vary from April 1 to June 30 depending on the subject. Check each target university individually.

APS certificate: for a winter semester application, your APS certificate should ideally be in hand by March of the same year. This means beginning the APS document submission process by December or January, and completing the APS interview by February or March.

Scholarships: DAAD scholarship deadlines for the winter semester are often in October or November of the preceding year — twelve to fourteen months before the intended programme start. Political foundation scholarship deadlines also typically fall in October to December.

Key Dates for APS, Language Tests, and Scholarships

APS document submission: ideally January to March for winter semester entry; August to September for summer semester entry. Processing time: six to twelve weeks after submission. APS interview: two to four weeks after document processing is complete.

TestDAF test dates in India (approximate): February, March, April, June, September, October, November. Registration closes approximately six to eight weeks before each test date.

DSH: administered directly by German universities, typically in March/April and August/September. Only accessible to students already in Germany.

Goethe-Zertifikat: available year-round at Goethe-Institut centres across India. Test dates every two to three months at most levels.

IELTS: available at British Council and IDP centres across India, approximately twice per month. Results available within three to thirteen days depending on test format.

W-year minus 18 to 20 months: Begin German language study (if not already at B2 level).

W-year minus 14 to 16 months: Research programmes and universities. Begin supervisor contact for doctoral applications. Begin scholarship research.

W-year minus 12 to 14 months: Submit DAAD and political foundation scholarship applications (deadlines typically October to November of the year before entry).
