Why August 2026 Is the Right Time to Start for October 2027

If your goal is to begin a Master's or Bachelor's programme at a German university in October 2027, the preparation needs to begin now — in August 2026. This is not unnecessarily early caution. It is the realistic lead time that the sequence of preparation tasks requires.

The two tasks with the longest lead times are German language preparation (which requires 18 to 24 months from zero to C1 level) and APS certificate processing (which requires six to ten weeks of processing time after document submission, preceded by however long it takes to assemble the required documents). Both of these tasks need to be underway now for a student who wants to be ready to submit university applications in April to July 2027.

This calendar provides month-by-month guidance from August 2026 through October 2027 — fourteen months of structured preparation that makes the German university application journey manageable rather than overwhelming.

August–October 2026: Foundations

August 2026 is the moment to make the fundamental decisions about your Germany application and to initiate the longest-lead-time tasks.

If you are not already studying German: begin immediately. Register for a Goethe-Institut course or equivalent at your nearest centre, establish a daily study routine with online supplementary resources (DW Learn German, Anki vocabulary practice, German podcasts at your current level), and set the specific language test date you are targeting as your preparation goal. For students beginning from zero in August 2026, a target of TestDAF in October or November 2027 requires twelve to fifteen months of consistent study — achievable if started immediately.

August 2026: research your target field and the German universities and programmes you want to apply to. Build a preliminary shortlist of five to eight programmes across a range of competitiveness levels. For each, confirm whether application goes through uni-assist or directly, and note the approximate application deadline.

September 2026: begin assembling your APS documents. Collect original and certified copies of all academic certificates from Class 10 onwards. Check the APS website for the current document requirements. Aim to have documents ready for submission to APS by November 2026.

October 2026: submit APS documents and book your APS interview slot. This is the most time-critical task of the entire preparation — the earlier you submit, the earlier your interview can be scheduled and the earlier your certificate can be issued. Research and shortlist your scholarship options. DAAD research scholarship deadlines for doctoral applicants typically fall in October to November 2026 for the 2027 intake — if applicable, begin these applications now.

November 2026–January 2027: Language, Scholarships, and APS

November 2026: attend your APS interview (if scheduled within this window). Complete and submit any scholarship applications with October or November deadlines. Take a formal German language placement test if you have not already done so — knowing your precise current level is the foundation of effective subsequent preparation.

December 2026: receive your APS certificate (if processing is complete). If your APS interview has not yet occurred, follow up with the APS office. Continue German language study — December holiday periods are excellent intensive study opportunities. Begin drafting your motivation letters and personal statements for university applications, even in rough form — the earlier you start, the more iterations you can refine through.

January 2027: register for your TestDAF or IELTS/TOEFL examination. TestDAF sittings in India typically take place in February and March — register by mid-January to secure your preferred test date. Begin creating your uni-assist account if your applications will go through uni-assist. Confirm the specific application deadlines for each programme on your shortlist.

February–April 2027: Tests, Applications, and Active Preparation

February 2027: sit your TestDAF (if targeting February sitting). If your result is not yet sufficient, sit again in March or April — TestDAF can be taken multiple times and there is no penalty for retaking. Continue university application document preparation: collect university transcripts, confirm reference letter commitments with your supervisors, and finalise motivation letters for each target programme.

March 2027: begin submitting university applications. The uni-assist application window for the winter semester typically opens in April, but some direct application programmes accept applications earlier. For programmes with March or April deadlines, submit as early in the month as possible. For programmes with July deadlines, submitting in April or May — early in the window — gives you the best chance of early consideration.

April 2027: the uni-assist application window opens. Submit all applications through uni-assist promptly and completely — document checklist verified before submission, payment made, confirmation email received. Continue submitting direct applications to programmes not going through uni-assist. Follow up with reference letter providers to confirm letters have been submitted.

Language: if your TestDAF result is not yet sufficient and you have a March or April retake date, adjust your remaining preparation based on which components are weakest.

May–October 2027: Decisions, Visa, and Departure

May–June 2027: receive admission offers (or further assessment requests). Evaluate each offer against your shortlist criteria — research group fit, programme curriculum, location, scholarship outcome — and make your acceptance decisions. For programmes that offer interviews or additional assessment, prepare and attend these promptly.

June 2027: accept your first-choice offer formally. Begin setting up your blocked account (Fintiba or Expatrio) and transfer funds. Apply for student health insurance through your chosen Krankenkasse. Begin searching for accommodation — dormitory applications should be submitted immediately to the relevant Studentenwerk.

July 2027: book your visa appointment at the German Embassy or Consulate General for your jurisdiction in India. Appointment booking should happen as soon as you have your admission letter and blocked account certificate — July is the peak period for student visa appointments, and some missions may have waiting times of four to six weeks. Complete any missing documents for the visa package.

August 2027: attend your visa appointment. Receive your visa. Book your flight. Make final pre-departure preparations — housing confirmed, necessary purchases planned, family communications established.

September 2027: arrive in Germany. Complete Anmeldung in the first week. Open German bank account. Attend university orientation week. Begin your German university experience.

October 2027: your first semester begins. You have arrived.
